The women’s tennis world knows who their top five players are. It is the same group of ladies that have been in this group for years. The top 5 is an exclusive club with only these players allowed to be in it.
Five is not a very big number when you think about it. There are only one more player left outside of this club that could join if they were given the chance to do so. Today I am going to tell you who the sixth best player right now in women’s tennis really is, but first let me introduce my panel of experts that helped me come up with this ranking list. All quotes are taken directly from past articles on http://www.tennis-pulse.com
Panel of Experts:
Ricky Dimon- Assistant editor at http://www.tennisworldusa.org/ and he also contributes to their match coverage on the ATP level, as well as their Grand Slam events. Michael – He is a full time tennis coach and writer for http://www.thetennisspace.com .He has been writing about tennis for several years now at both sites. Steve Tignor- Senior Writer for covering all things Tennis related on the ATP tour at https://tennis.yahoo.com/ . Has written articles about the WTA, men’s college tennis & more in his illustrious career with them. Myself – An avid fan of all things tennis, I run a tennis blog called http://www.tennis-pulse.com . I also am writing match previews and reviews on the WTA level for them, as well as doing player profile articles like this one you are reading now.
Panel of Experts #2:
This panel consists of past & present players that know their stuff about today’s game if you ask me. They can see things happening in today’s game that casual fans cannot pick up on immediately. They know the game very well so anything they say is credible to me. Marat Safin- Former number 1 ranked men’s singles player in the world Tatiana Golovin- She represented team France at Cup for many years before retiring recently to pursue other life opportunities Amelie Mauresmo- French pro that represented team France at Cup for a number of years, former number 1 WTA player in the world Janko Tipsarevic- Former #8 ranked player in the world, I consider him an expert because he knows what it takes to get to the top from being there himself.
The Top 5 Women’s Tennis Players:
Serena Williams Maria Sharapova Li Na Victoria Azarenka Maria Kirilenko
Here are our experts’ individual rankings. If you want to see where our panel members differed check out the bottom half of this article after we reveal who we think is #6. FINAL RANKINGS The last spot was the toughest for us to determine, but I think we made a well-educated guess.
6. Samantha Stosur The Australian is the only player on this list that has won a Grand Slam event. With her big serve and heavy groundstrokes she can hang with anyone in the world at any time on any surface. She may not have had as much success as some of these other players on tour, but no one out there is better at playing their best when it truly matters. That’s why I believe she deserves the #6 spot over others that are also very good tennis players at all surfaces including grass ones, that’s how superior Stosur is in my eyes.
The Expert Rankings:
Dimon: Samantha Stosur Steve: Samantha Stosur Michael: Angelique Kerber Ricky: Maria Kirilenko Me: Maria Kirilenko
Now that you have seen our opinions on who we think is the best player not currently in the “top 5”, it’s time to hear what our panel members thought about this topic. You will soon see their rankings, so I would recommend reading them after you look at our final results.
5. Marion Bartoli With a world of potential for her future
as a top tennis player, Marion Bartoli is climbing up the ranks as one of the most talented ladies on tour today. She shows great composure and focus during big moments without letting emotions get in the way of her game. That has carried her a long way, and it will continue to do so in the future.
4. Agnieszka Radwanska
The beautiful Aga is all about movement and control on court with a nice balance between defense and offense that makes her a real treat to watch play live or on TV for any fan of professional tennis. She is also one of the most technically sound players out there when you look at how she moves around the court without any wasted energy from being reckless. That all adds up to being better than most at nearly every surface which is why I believe she deserves to be called one of the best women’s tennis players in the world today.
3. Jelena Jankovic I have been a fan of hers since
she first came on tour years ago as a teenager. Although she has been up and down over her career, there is no denying that when you match her talent with the right mindset, she can beat anyone out there. The Serbian star might struggle with consistency at times against the very top players in the world, but it’s important to remember that her best days are still ahead of her as she continues to grow into a more complete player as long as health issues do not hold her back from staying on tour for too long.
2. Caroline Wozniacki In my opinion this young
Danish superstar deserves to be ranked higher than where our panel members had her ranked due to how dominant she can be when she is able to play her game without worrying about getting too out of control. Her defense is always strong which gives her a real edge whenever she plays. She has great court awareness, and given how much experience she has at such a young age, it isn’t hard to see why I believe Wozniacki belongs among the top 5 women’s tennis players in the world today.
1. Petra Kvitova
The best player not currently ranked in the top 5 according to our panelists is former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The Czech beauty does everything well on court with no major weaknesses that would cause her problems against any opponent on tour today if she plays well enough.
